The fellowship awarded to me by Harvard University, specifically by the Center for Hellenic Studies (https://greece.chs.harvard.edu/fellows/giannis-perperidis), begins today, July 1, 2025 and runs until June 30, 2026.
The research I will conduct, entitled “Envisioning Ethical Artificial Intelligence through Commons-based Open Design Principles”, focuses on the study of AI through the concept of openness. Drawing on Andrew Feenberg’s philosophy of technology, the constructivist approach of Science and Technology Studies (STS), and the values, organizational and production frameworks of the digital commons, I will try to examine whether an open AI based on the standards of the commons – a version of AI that is also the subject of my study and not something taken for granted – can constitute a more just and ethical form of technology.
This question is part of the broader research interest of my research and writings around the notion of openness in technology, which advocate for the democratization of the latter and, through this, the constitution of a more ethical and just technological condition in general.
From time to time I will publish here the texts that emerge as a product of the scholarship, together with conclusions or material from interviews I conduct.
